Are you willing to learn about actuators and their main function in industrial manufacturing? You’re going to learn it all in this informative post. First, we’re going to define what an actuator is, then we’ll move forward towards its basic functions.

What is the Actuator?

An actuator is a device that produces motion by converting energy and signals going into the system. The motion it produces can be either rotary or non-rotary (non-linear). In other words, an actuator is also described as a control mechanism generally, which is operated by an energy source.

Now it could be pneumatic, hydraulic pressure, or electric current which moves inner mechanical parts of the actuator. Actuators are expanded into various types including direct, and rotary actuators. They’re also differentiated in the basis of being quarter-turn (e.g., ball valves, plug valves) or direct (linear) (e.g., gate valves) valve operation.

Each actuator type has different versions of various power configurations which comes in multiple styles and sizes varying on their application.

What is the Function of the Actuator?

Actuators are primarily required for those installation work either has nothing to do with human interaction, or is not eligible for human effort due to security purpose, or danger warnings like; where space or installation location inhibits access to the valve operator.

As far as the function of the actuator is concerned, so actuators are basically responsible for providing thrust and positioning in machines used for production or testing. One sort is the electromechanical actuator, which changes over the torque of an electric rotary motor into linear mechanical thrust.

The main usage of the actuator is concerned with various valves including; ball or butterfly.

What things to consider before buying actuators?

Now moving towards those factors which you should consider before buying actuators;

·  Decide the Amount of Force Required

Before you buy accurate actuator for your project, first you need to decide how much amount of force you need, you have to determine the weight of the object which has to be moved or need to lift up in your project.

There are some reputable, and affordable companies which offer a wide range of products from small size direct actuators with a force capacity of 15 lbs. to industrial heavy duty actuators which are able to move forces up to 2000 lbs.

·  Decide the Distance which your Actuator could move

What is the amount of distance which you want to move via actuators in your project? This distance moving via actuator is also known as stroke length and it tells how far the linear actuator will move in one direction.

There are many companies which carry different linear actuators with strokes ranging from 1″ up to 60″.

·  What Speed is required?

Here comes the main concern! In which speed your project should move? Actuator’s speed is measured in distance per second. The detail sheet for a straight actuator will disclose to you the speed that the actuator is appraised for. For the most part, the higher the power required, the slower the actuator will move.
